Malawi passes Region Five second inspection

A team of African Union Sports Council Region Five (AUSC 5) has expressed satisfaction with preparations for the 2022 Youth Games.

Speaking during a press conference on Sunday at Sunbird Capital in Lilongwe, AUSC chief executive officer Stanley Mutoya said they are impressed with existing venues and progress of those under construction.

He said: “We have exactly 12 months before the country host the games. This is our second inspection and we are happy with the progress. We visited the aquatic complex under construction.

“We have seen drawings and the specifications. We think there is good work going on. We will bring a team from swimming federation on Friday so as not to leave anything to chance.”

Mutoya said they inspected the indoor sports complex and made recommendations, especially in relation to lighting and ventilation.

He said they inspected other venues that will host football, boxing, field and track and other sports disciplines.

On his part, Minister of Youth and Sports Ulemu Msungama said government is committed to hosting a successful competition

He said: “The facilities like indoor complex and aquatic centre are all designed to be state of the art venues and last a long time. That’s why government has invested a lot in the two projects.

“We want to have facilities that can host any international events. It’s not just about the 2022 Games but beyond that. But I can assure the AUSC delegation that we will meet the deadline and all specifications.”

This was the second time for the delegation to inspect the facilities.
